Bozak's Future

Thanks for that...assumed his contract ran until midnight on Thursday.

No, they changed things up with the new CBA. There's now an "interview period" between contracts expiring and UFA season officially opening for business. Teams are free to talk to any free agent on the market right now and even agree to terms with them, but they can only officially sign guys who played for other teams at noon on Friday.

Guess that means Friday could be a pretty fun day. Will stay tuned.

I think players agreeing to terms could leak out on Wednesday and Thursday and those deals could become official on Friday.

Would we get anything for trading Bozak's rights now? I'm thinking along the lines of a 6th round pick?

The Leafs no longer own his rights. His contract officially expired at midnight on June 30th.

I could still see Jay Feaster trying to trade for his rights.

@DarrenDreger "Bozak contract talks expected to resume today with Leafs. Proposal on the table believed to be 8 years at less than $5 mil per."

Lol this cannot possibly be true. I think Dreger has lost it again.  This and the Clarkson $6.5 rumor..

ONLY THE FLYERS PAY THESE KINDS OF PRICES!!!! ........... wait...

None of those numbers make sense to me. 8 years? No thanks. $5M per? No thanks. $6.5M per for Clarkson? That's double what he's worth!

DarrenDreger: @mirtle. Keep in mind, the proposal on the table wasn't made by the team. I believe response from Newport...

Now it makes sense.

I still don't get why people hold it against Bozak that he was played #1 center minutes.

Me too.  I am surprised at how much he is disliked by some.  Remember, he cost us nothing to acquire.

There's no way Leafs give Bozak 8 years.  If any team gives that to Bozak, his agent will be Tyler's BFF.

Total sense.

Agent floating it via the media to see how many heads explode upon hearing that $/term.  I think all heads exploded.

I'd guess it was someone in Nonis's office who floated it.

"Less than $5m per" could mean a lot of things. Like $1.5m per?

As long as he doesn't want a no trade clause, I'd be ok with a 6-8 year contract, in the $2.8-$3.2 range. You can always trade him when you find someone better and/or when the cap goes higher. The thing you have with Bozak is if you acquire a number one center that doesn't mesh well with Kessel or is injury prone, ala Tim Connolly, you can always pop Bozie back into that slot.

As you could with Kadri and, now that Bolland's in, Grabbo. And maybe even Bolland. Or McClement. I mean, two years of Bozak centering him has proven Kessel can shoot pucks in off almost anybody.

You could. Just not sure then why Bozie was slotted as the number one and not the other players you've mentioned?  I think there's some chemistry there that may not necessarily be with some of the others.

Spreading out the attack, maybe? Letting the center who brings the least to the table be lifted by the all-star winger? Poor coaching? I don't know.

But I do know the chemistry thing is bunk: http://theleafsnation.com/2013/5/21/nozak-the-chemistry-chronicles

Provided of course, you subscribe to the same ludicrously narrow definition of "chemistry" from a hockey sense that the article writer does.
