Getzlaf and Ryan "in play" according to Bob Murray

Brian Burke is scheduled to speak with reporters at noon. No word yet on the news.

I am sure it is unrelated..... or not? lol

Probably just a previously scheduled mid-season state of the union type thing.

how about Schenn, Kadri and our 1st?

Murray did say he wouldn't be unloading his big guys for picks... my guess would be he would want something more like a Bozak or another (Grabbo?) who is ready now instead of the pick.... or in addition.

What does everyone think of the concept of say moving Kulemin, Grabbo and Schenn for Getz?

A bit of an over payment. we cant empty three top line spots to fill one, that would be a step back. keep kul and toss in mac and then I would take that chance.

Kulemin is a great second line player, but not a first-liner and certainly not even in the same galaxy as a franchise type player Getzlaf is. Schenn can be an effective shut-down guy but certainly not the cornerstone type defenceman we hoped he be nor am I holding my breath that he'll turn out that way. Grabo (like Kulemin) probably falls in to the second-line caliber player Kulemin does but as stated earlier, has marginal value due to his contract status (unless said status is the attraction.)

Personally, if I'm Murray, I'm looking for a better deal than Kulemin, Schenn, and Grabo and as a Leaf fan, I'd be over the moon if that was all it took to acquire Getzlaf because the pieces we'd be giving up are largely replaceable.

So you would give up two rom our 2nd line and a top four d to get a guy for the first line. doing that I would rather keep kul because he is one of our top two way players, and has lots of up side. this is why i would toss in mac, and if need be a prospect as well, but not much more, as we dont want to tear up the team for one guy.

Yeah, Pierre Lebrun thinks it is to discuss Orr and clearing waivers, etc.

What timing though, wow.  12 hours after twitter explodes with Getzlaf talk.

Real_ESPNLeBrun: My guess is that Burke noon presser is to explain decision to waive Colton Orr

DarrenDreger: @Real_ESPNLeBrun. That's what Burke is telling people. Speaks to Burke's respect for Orr.

Well that was fun for 12 minutes

Well, yes and no. I mean, the statement from Murray likely came out of a similar mid-season type of press gathering. I imagine most GMs have either met with the press in the past couple days or will be meeting with them in the next couple days.

"Here are my reasons for waiving Colton..."

"oh and by the way we've just acquired Getzlaf and Ryan"

agreed...if burke makes this deal its going to hurt a little...there will be guys that will be missed.
Kadri, colborne, gunner, + one of the 3mil(ish) players (grabs, bozak, mac, schenn)

for getz and a filler/salary dump and a low pick or two

I guess if the leafs want to keep either of kadri or colborne they could sub frattin in for either of those guys.

We would not be "tearing up the team."

- Aulie replaces Schenn... Also, Gardiner has been a great surprise.
- Frattin/Kadri replaces Kulemin.
- Lombardi/Colborne, heck Bozak (when he returns) replaces Grabo.

This is why you make yourself deep... To make deals like this when they present themselves.

Funny.

Id like to keep at least one of Kadri or Colbourne, but the rest im okay with if its for Getzlaf.

Id throw Kadri and Bozak easily, the rest I would have to think about.

I really like Grabovski and MacArthur, although I think Mac played well above his head last season but I still like him. Id also like to not decimate the defense by trading Gunnarsson and Schenn. Id probobly trade Schenn over Gunner to be honest.

Kadri, Bozak, MacArthur and Schenn? Is that worth it? Would the ducks take it? Id throw in a pick maybe but Murray said they arent interested in those.... at least so he says.

Unlike previous times in history, the Leafs actually have enough to send to Murray to get the deal done if Burke has to stones (no doubting that) to get the deal done. I hope it doesnt get into a crazy bidding war with other teams or something.

Theres no way in the universe Burke wont be doing everything at his disposal to try and pry Getzlaf out of Anaheim.

^ I agree with Sarge, we have plenty of players to fill in the holes and we can afford to part with some significant talent for once.

Something that was not possible 2-3 seasons ago, so we had to deal draft picks.

Talk about the "blue and white disease".  We really need a press conference to address Colton Orr?  Really?  How much did he contribute to the team?

Exactly my thoughts.

Plus, Kulemin & Grabbo have more been the 3rd line this year than the 2nd or even the 1st they were last year.  That DOES NOT MEAN I think they are junk.. .it means I think others have stepped way up and they have not been as good overall.

Kadri's performance so far shows me he's basically ready to step in, with Frattin right there too, so let him step in and make room.  Bozak has been better than Grabbo and between Getzlaf, Connoly and Bozak I'm very comfortable with those guys as the top 3 centres, with Lombardi, Steckel and Boyce right in behind them to boot.

I've noted a few weeks ago where I felt Schenn's ceiling in my mind has dropped and overall I think Franson is the better player-in-the-making.  The Leafs have an abundance of d-men for the right side and at some point they need to make a little room there.  With Komi coming back and Franson starting to round out now, they are well covered.

Burke will get another part back in the deal as well no doubt as well, which will probably turn into some valuable tool in the bottom six that helps maintain some depth.

As Busta has already alluded to, it's probobly just out of respect for Colton.

The man did suffer a serious concussion while serving the team after all. He doesnt deserve a "k thx bye" ?

If I'm Murray I ask Burke for Colborne, Schenn, Kulemin, and a 1st and if I'm Burke, I try to talk Murray out of one of the pieces and into a lesser one.

If Burke were to acquire Getzlaf without having to give up Kadri, I would be thoroughly impressed.  If I were in Anaheim's shoes, I'd insist on having Kadri included in any deal.

Perhaps, but given how horrible they are defensively they are more likely looking to make the key piece of the deal a d-man and try to get something that can fill in up front in the shorter term.

Or, they think they can get both.

I'm just speculating that Murray would inquire on Colborne (if only to fill a hole at that position.)
