Gustavsson

I think Gustavsson played his own game.  Before he looked uncomfortable out there.  That goal he let in deflected twice, so can't blame him for that.

He looked confident and played solidly in the win against Washington.  A big boost for the Monster, and, he needs to keep up playing this way, for the sake of the team, and for himself.

? I thought he looked poised and very focused and intense.

Gus looked great out there last night, now thats the goalie we thought we were getting. if i'm Wilson he gets the net tonight just to see if he can build on that solid game.

Yes I am sure RW will give him the start.  Gus hadn't played in 11 days before last night so exhaustion surely won't be a factor.

After wins over TB and Caps, its fair to say that Gustavsson has prolonged his NHL career.

Very true.

Bah, he could win 10 in a row and when he loses the 11th some people in the media will call him fragile etc.

I am so glad he's hanging in there and playing well again -- where is everyone who was clamoring for Biron, Emery, and God knows who?

Speaking as a guy who wanted help (but not from any of the guys you mention) I think the news of Reimer coming back plus the decent play of both Scrivens and Goose (of late) probably choked-out that fire a bit.

After his first start against Boston, Gus has put up a 2.62 GAA and .912 SV% in 8 starts.

That's solid, didn't realize he was that good after that first start.  I have no issues with him right now, even the goal last night which was a bit suspect was off a one-timer.  The way he played after that goal says a lot about his frame of mind, he seems very confident now and can bounce back after a goal.

I think his last two starts have been his best of the season, but is it any coincidence those were two games where the Leafs as a whole played really really well? I think what I noticed about him the most is that he has been more calm in the net and just being more positionally sound. Good on Gus.

I still find goaltending difficult to judge compared to pre-lockout years. Here's the backup's primary numbers (ignoring win% that has even more to do with the team in front of them):
Gus 3.21 GAA .899 save%
Ben 2.96 GAA .904 save%

I then looked at those numbers for the goalies on the other 29 NHL teams. At a glance, those numbers are arguably comparable or better than at least one of the two primary goalies on the following 19 teams:

Carolina
Chicago
Colorado
Columbus
Dallas
Detroit
Los Angeles
Nashville
New Jersey
Ottawa
NY Islanders?
Philadelphia
Phoenix
Pittsburgh
St Louis?
Tampa
Vancouver?
Washinton
Winnipeg

As much as we've had some handwringing moments with goaltending during Reimer's absence, it looks like a bunch of other teams have had some as well.

In the worst case, with his performances in the last two games, the jury has to still be out on whether Gustavsson belongs in the NHL. Based upon his play of the last two games, he certainly looked like he belongs.

Given his inexperience/development and that he started in the ECHL out of college last year, that most certainly applies to Scrivens.

I don't think many teams would freak out if their backup goalies delivered .500 win% as these two have when their starter was out.

Their recent play has been encouraging.

I always liked the Monster and felt that he was snake bitten in the past.  One game against the Habs, Komisarek made a beautiful pass to a Habs player who was in front of the net and scored.  The Monster was not expecting that pass because Komisarek was playing for the Leafs that game.  Another game, Beauchemin coughed up the puck in front of the net resulting in a goal.

The last few games I've noticed he's far less scrambly in the net. Wilson seems to think so as well according to his post-game presser. He just needs to keep himself calm and not over-exert himself in movements.

IMO, Gus is looking so much better over his last two start because the team is finally playing well in front of him. He has some really excellent saves last evening especially in the first period. If the team can continue playing that way in front of him, we should not have very many issues.

The team on the whole is really getting good at keeping the shots from the outside and blocking a lot of chances with active sticks in the passing lanes.  Many times last night Tampa had the puck in the Leafs zone for an extended period but couldn't get a quality shot on net due to blocked shots.  It's a nice thing to see.
