Gustavsson

With Gustavsson's strong play of late, Reimer's return will add another capable goalie but I don't expect him to play any better than the Monster is right now.

Reimer is better because his rebound control is better than Gustavsson and his positioning is more consistent.  Where Jonas gets in trouble is the follow up shots off a rebound where Reimer might not have given up a rebound on the same sort of shot. Also I don't see Reimer out of position as often as Gus.

Jonas last 5 ga, IIRC, had nothing to do with rebound control, a double deflection ( wash ), a quick one timer that he almost had ( tampa ), a shot from the slot ( Nystroms first last night ) a tough cross ice pass and a screened shot ( Phaneuf ).

I don't think Reimer has been yards better in the starts he's had this year either.

Hopefully this further solidifies his confidence and puts to end once and for all the questioning about whether he's got the goods to be the backup.

I like his game of late, but I'll only be convinced its for real once Reimer starts getting the lions share of games and if Gus continues to play well coming in cold every 5th or 6th game.

If you take what Burke and Co. have said the original plan, before Reimers injury, was to have Jonas play more like every 3rd game or even a little more, something like a 50-30 split on the season.

Either way he has to show us that his confidence doesn't run hot and cold once Reimer gets back and he starts getting less work moving forward.

Didn't he just do that?

He was swimming a little bit in the 2nd period, though, his teammates weren't helping him out a ton either (outside of the couple plays that directly prevented goals), but, overall, he played fairly well. He's regained my confidence in him as the backup goalie.

I do still cringe a little when he tries to play the puck, though.

Short answer: No. He's been cold, now he's hot. Its too small of sample size to convince me this isn't just another hot streak that goes cold soon. Of course I hope it isn't, but I'll wait and see.

Maybe I'm just supersticous but has anyone else noticed Gustavsson has become a significantly better goaltender since he changed his mask?

Without a doubt, his old mask was clearly blocking his field of vision.

He was getting less work and came in and did the job, whether it's Reimer or not doesn't change the nature of the recent workload, isn't that what you're speculating about?

I don't think it's a matter of hot and cold either, unless I'm missing something about Jonas being streaky... hasn't been a general observation I've really seen much of, all he needs to be is adequate and keep the Leafs in the game overall which he seems to do more often than not.

The whole team has played better recently too, I think that may be more important, fwiw.

Before we get too excited about Mirtle, somebody ask him what Gus's winning percentage is this year.  OK, I'll help: it's 63%.  Project that out over a full season (as so many are fond of doing) and you get a team with -- zounds -- 50 wins.  That sure sucks.  100 points is right on the bubble for playoffs.

Oh Mirtle, nothing to really write home about, eh?

How about Vesa Toskala's career in TO? .894 and 3.08, or even just the last 79 games he played... ( to compare a similar stretch and hey, in front of the same team... )

.886 and 3.39, yowza!

...not to buy into the continual negative drivel or anything coming from Mirtle's general direction, just because it's there!

Also, before we get too excited about the Leafs, note that they were really bad two years ago.

Also, 1967.  Remember that.

....AND Martin Brodeur has more losses than anyone in history. It's all about perspective, and some folks twist facts to suit their purposes.

26/28 tonight and save percentage up to 901 for the year.

But really, the stat that matters - Wins: 8 Not bad for a back up
