So assuming (correctly I think) we're in tough against Boston, who do you start? I mean, I don't want Goose to get unglued again now that he's got it together but at the same time, is it fair to throw Scrivens to the wolves? Know what I mean?

Before this year, Gus had a pretty decent record against the Bruins.  Maybe he can find that touch again.

Imagine the statement game it would be for Gustavsson to bounce back against the Bruins after being written off so early?  The confidence it would create for the rest of the team?  A dream scenario really, beating the Stanley Cup champs to extend your winning streak to 4 games with your backup goalie.

While they are undefeated in 11.

perhaps you mean, have points in the last 11?  they have an otl

Points in last 12.  Scary.

Their back up goalie once shut out the Leafs while the Leafs used their #1 goalie.

Oh.  I forgot.  That would have been Rask for the Bruins and Raycrap for the Leafs.

so the star has an article about being the backup: http://www.thestar.com/sports/leafs/article/1094262--be-quiet-and-happy-the-life-of-a-backup-goalie

My but with his rather recent success will Gustavsson really be the backup?  Or will the leafs try more of a 1a and 1b approach?

If Reimer comes back and plays at the level he did last season, there is no doubt that he is the go-to starter. With that said, he'll be coming back from injury and has a career high of 60 games played (with Red Deer). I'd imagine Gus would see a third of the starts or so.

Rask has never shut out the Leafs.

No, he has not, but, he's also never allowed more than 2 goals to the Leafs, so, I can understand why people might believe he has.

No doubt, some stellar performances - albeit not against the greatest Leafs teams, but still.

I liked this comment from Reimer on Gustavsson.  Nice things just pour from this guy:

?When this hit, when (Scrivens) kind of had a few games, a lesser man could have really taken it in a bad way,? said Reimer. ?I know he went out in practice and just kept working hard and now he's playing phenomenal. I didn't really doubt that he could do it and sure enough, here he is.

?I'm really happy for the success he's had.?

It has to be an act.  Noone can be that nice.

Justin Goldman of the Goalie Guild has made a few comments about Gustavsson's pads and a potential issue he sees with them on twitter in the last couple of weeks. Today he posted an article about it on his site. It doesn't offer much of a conclusion, but for those interested you can check it out here:

This guy has a lot of time on his hands.

I've been reading that site now and then for a couple of years?/a while now. I also read his tweets on Gus a while back.

For those that are interested in the position, it's pretty good stuff (though some of it is no longer free).

I was a little disappointed Dobbers site went cash only too but I can understand why.

Fwiw, I watched Wilsons pc after the game again and he said he 'concurred' with Jonas' opinion that a couple goals were stoppable but he didn't put much weight on it, 'it happens'.

I feel Gustavsson never really looks totally "comfortable" because he doesn't have the best tracking skills. He picks up many shots late...

...when he scrambles and battles, he thrives by getting his body behind pucks and utilizing his size. But I think his vision holds him back.

So I think the whole "is he or is he not an Allaire-style goalie?" dynamic is a moot point. Without better tracking skills, it won't matter.

Interesting observation and he might be right.

Gus looses track of the puck more than any goalie I have ever seen.

I kinda feel the same way about Reimer sometimes though.  It just seems like sometimes the puck just hits him.  Not that I am complaining, but it looks like he loses track of the play.  So far, the goalie that I think keeps track of the play the most is Ben Scrivens.

I've seen plenty, start with Toskala and go from there...

Was tonight Gus's best game so far? Definitely one of his most composed and calm preformances I think, but he still had the ability to scramble when he had to.

Improves to 9-5 record as well, handy enough! (Take the Bruins out and he's flying ;) )
