Is Burke Handicapping Himself?

Didn't Burke say he didn't give out NTC's once upon a time too?

He said something to the effect of players having to earn them, or certain players get them. Not that he doesn't give them out.

He said he hated them and called them "coach / GM killers" didn't he? But he has acquiesced on that since <Leafs have 7 NTCs> I'm sure he'll come around with contract length at some point too..

He was specifically talking about full NTC clauses when he called them coach-killers, since if a coach ever had a problem with a player it would be the coach leaving as the player couldn't be traded. And Burke hasn't ever given out an iron-clad NTC/NMC. They've all had some modifications or limits that still make a player tradeable.

I wonder if that is above average for the league.

6 seems to be about the average. Calgary and Boston have the most with 11 and 10 respectively. LA is the only team without one.

Didn't Richards and Carter have one? Did waiving them once meant they vanished?

Their no-trade clauses didn't kick in until a later date in their contracts. And if a team trades a player with a NTC that isn't active yet then the team getting the player has the option of taking it on or not.

Wow. Man, Philly really boned those guys over.

Yup. When LA traded Lubomir Visnovsky to Edmonton a few years ago it was 1 day before his NTC was going to kick in.

I Believe Burke has said he doesn't like the cap-circumvention contracts that have the low tails that he doesn't believe players will play out.  Strictly speaking, length isn't the issue -- I believe he said that he didnt have a problem with a contract that pays the same rate every year like DiPietro's.

As mentioned earlier Burke this week said flat out that he won't offer 10 year deals.

Does anyone know if there is there a transcript of that interview anywhere?  My home internet is terrible to stream anything.

If not I'll just wait until I'm on campus and listen to it.

Pretty sure Burke felt long-term contracts kill a player's incentive.  I'd agree.  Give me guaranteed millions and I'm not busting my butt in the summer or risking injury if can be helped on the ice.

Well, you've certainly established that you would make for a terrible professional athlete.

I love the rationale though. "I'm fine with signing a guy to a five year, 45 million dollar deal but 10 years and 90 million? Where's the incentive?"

I think if there is no term cap put on contracts when the new CBA is said and done, Burke has to change his tune. He will have no choice, otherwise the best players in the league will continue to go elsewhere and he will start to lose his own better players.

ie: If Kessel puts up two more 80'ish point seasons and stays healthy, he's not going to sign for 5 years.  He will be looking for the retirement deal just like everyone else.

IMO I think the league gets either a cap (my guess is 6 years) or they put in some kind of deterrent to these ultra-long contracts. Burke is right that they are insane, but at some point you have to keep up and financials shouldn't really be a concern for the Maple Leafs.

Yeah, I agree. I'm fine with Burke's stance (for now) but if there aren't going to be penalties (as speculated) for these types of deals then he'll just have to play along.

I think this new CBA will influence Burke's stand on this. Either these ultra-long contracts will be eliminated, or it'll essentially be a "stamp of approval" for them, which may force Burke to consider them.

Some teams are finding out it is very difficult to move big contracts, especially when the GMs want to change the makeup of those teams by trying to trade the players with the big contracts.  At the same time, a player with a big contract could be stuck on a team that has no chance of making the playoffs for a long time.  So both the players and the GMs can make it difficult upon themselves by having big long contracts.
