Is Burke Handicapping Himself?

Yeah, I agree. I'm fine with Burke's stance (for now) but if there aren't going to be penalties (as speculated) for these types of deals then he'll just have to play along.

I think this new CBA will influence Burke's stand on this. Either these ultra-long contracts will be eliminated, or it'll essentially be a "stamp of approval" for them, which may force Burke to consider them.

I hops so... Though I still find 12 and 13 year deals kind of silly.  :-\

I Believe Burke has said he doesn't like the cap-circumvention contracts that have the low tails that he doesn't believe players will play out.  Strictly speaking, length isn't the issue -- I believe he said that he didnt have a problem with a contract that pays the same rate every year like DiPietro's.

As mentioned earlier Burke this week said flat out that he won't offer 10 year deals.

Oh, ok.  I missed that.  Hmmm.  That's dumb.  Let's hope he's saved by the new CBA.

IMO, these long term contracts are the worst thing about the NHL.  It's a joke to me that they can exist in a professional atmosphere like the NHL.  I like what the NBA just did, 5 year contracts if you stay with current team and maximum 4 year contracts if you sign elsewhere.  I would the love the NHL to have a similar format.

I don't think it would be ridiculous to stretch it out a tad longer but I would gig that.

I think/hope they cap them at 6 years and it would be nice to see them introduce the 5 year limit for leaving your current team.  The Nashvilles and others will be screaming for that kind of incentive.

I agree with Sgt and others, that these deals handcuff a team, regardless of the player, as it's too hard to predict what the player is going to do over that term. I mean he could suck for more than half that deal and as soon as a player starts sucking, that contract becomes the plague IMO.

Yeah. It would open up the sign and trade avenue as well.

They exist in Baseball and Football too. I don't see why any deal freely agreed upon by both parties is a "Joke" in a "professional atmosphere".

Some teams are finding out it is very difficult to move big contracts, especially when the GMs want to change the makeup of those teams by trying to trade the players with the big contracts.

What teams are those? Who is having trouble moving someone with a big contract?

Yeah. It would open up the sign and trade avenue as well.

Also, it would be wicked awesome if they had a clause that said the Maple Leafs could sign whoever they wanted every year and pay them in rainbows.

The only problem I have with that is the currency of Rainbows has become increasingly unstable, even more so than the Euro. I'm sure butterflies would be more widely accepted by the players union as well. Just a thought.

All this time, we've been debating whether this is a rebuild, a retool or a reload.  It turns out it's a rebuke.
