Jimmy Vesey

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out wherever he lands.  I don't recall the last time a college free agent has made a huge impact on an NHL team.  A few years ago Justin Schultz was "the guy" that everyone wanted and his career hasn't exactly been stellar so far. Maybe Vesey is the guy, who knows.

Blake Wheeler is the last one I can remember.

I believe he was a 20/20/40 guy his rookie year.

Not sure why they feel the need to justify what's financially best for Vesey. If the Leafs do sign them I don't think any proof of tampering would be found. You signed his dad and drafted his brother... good scout and good hockey player is all they would have to say.

It's important to remember that there's difference between undrafted college free agents and drafted college players who became free agents. Undrafted college free agents are often just guys who had great final years in college that earned them a NHL deal. Most of them do fizzle out. Bozak is probably one of the few that didn't.

But drafted college players who become free agents are often legitimate NHL prospects who just decline to sign with the team that drafted them. Blake Wheeler, Justin Schultz, Kevin Hayes, Mike Reilly. Wheeler's become a heck of a player, although for a 5th overall pick that's not surprising. Schultz has certainly stumbled, but how much of that was due to Edmonton has yet to be seen. He's apparently played fairly well for Pittsburgh. Kevin Hayes scored 45 points in his 1st season with the Rangers last year. And Mike Reilly's numbers in the AHL/NHL look pretty good for a guy in his first professional season.

#Sabres acquire rights to unsigned prospect Jimmy Vesey from #Preds for 3rd-round pick.

I read a comment from his agent saying he is still going to free agency in August and all this does is change the team that has his exclusive negotiating rights.

Which is a fair enough thing for an agent to say but it's important to keep in mind that NHL front offices are good, or at least try to be good, at selling dudes on playing there. So even if he didn't really like the Preds sales pitch it doesn't mean he won't be receptive to one from the Sabres.

True. The Sabres will have all summer to show him what a thriving, bustling, modern metropolis looks like, with its lovely variety of cuisine, vibrant night life, international diversity, and a rabid fan base....by taking him on day trips to Toronto. :p

Welcome Misty and very funny (and true).  Sorry Buffalo but you are not Toronto and unfortunetly never will be, although I do like the Anchor Bar

Vesey becomes a free agent at 12:01am Tuesday. The Leafs are still being tossed in there as contenders to sign him but if I had to guess I'd say he signs with the Rangers or Blackhawks.

Buffalo's Mike Harrington (the Babcock presser guy) is already complaining about how selfish Vesey's being. Apparently Vesey owed the Sabres something just because they stupidly traded a draft pick for him even though everybody knew he was going to become a UFA.

My guess is Chicago. With the pay being equal, the opportunity to step into a top 6 role on a contending team is probably enough to sway him.

Lou Lamoriello's still-close ties to eastern U.S. college hockey gives Leafs a formidable recruiting presence for Vesey

General Fanager  @generalfanager
Max deal for Vesey would be:
2 yr @ $925,000 cap hit, $3.775M AAV
$832,500 salary
$92,500 SB
$2.85M perf bonuses

Being a rational Leafs fan, if he signs with the Leafs it's a massive coup. Further evidence
that the Leafs have the best management group, coaching staff and future in the entire hocley
world.

If he signs elsewhere he's going to be revealed as a whiner and be a massive bust and playing in
Europe at the end of the 2 year deal and of course, the Leafs never wanted him anyway.  ;) 8)
