Leafs Re-Aquire David Clarkson

In for a penny, in for a pound.

If you're using LTIR anyway, then weaponize the heck out of it.
I don't see the benefit other then getting picks or whatever for taking more on. You're not gaining anymore cap space and we're tight against it now, which is a good thing LTIR wise, so what would be the point? Am I missing something?

Well, theoretically they would get more cap space.

So right now they have $10.55M in cap relief with Horton & Clarkson. Let's say for kicks and giggles they also get MacArthur back at $4.65M.  Horton+Clarkson+MacArthur on LTIR = $15.2M they could go over*

* - by adding MacArthur Leafs would have to make some sort of move to get the roster to $81.5M first, so that would probably mean trying to dump a Cody Ceci for nothing.

What the last 24 hours have hammered home is, it was way easier being a hockey fan when I was a kid.  You didn't have to worry about cap hits, contract values etc.  You either had good players or bad players and whether your favorite guy made $10M or $1M it didn't really matter cause they were part of the team.  Every trade was only scrutinized insofar as the play on the ice.  Now it's a whole different ballgame, being cap compliant, having dead money on the cap, sending guys up and down for cap savings etc.  It's all so stupid.  I just want to see them play.

The sad thing is we choose to get engaged at this level by debating on forums like this and twitter etc and before you realise it you're ruining the enjoyment.

A few years back I got involved with my local hockey team to the extent I got involved with the media doing interviews and stuff with the head coach and players at the end of every game and during the week. That meant watching the games in a much more "critical" way and not as a fan who could just enjoy it. Totally spoiled my fandom of the team and it's taken me a long time to get that love of the game/team back.

I quit that role and quit twitter and have a much more passive interest and it's working so far

It important to remember you can put players on LTIR in the summer if they have no chance of ever returning. It would end up on Capfriendly as SOIR (season opening injured reserve).  That way you don't have to wait until day 2 of the season to make a deal like Marner's official. (or any of the other deals they haven't made official yet)

This is not accurate:

What is the season opening injured reserve (SOIR)?
If a player who is on a two-way contract becomes disabled during training-camp or who reports to training-camp disabled as the result of a hockey related injury incurred during the off-season, they can be placed on season-opening injured reserve, to possibly obtain cap relief. It is notable that the SOIR equations are not the same as the daily rate equations in CBA 15.6, which is instead used to calculate the players daily salary (as opposed to cap hit).

None of these players are on two-way contracts.

is there a limit to the number of LTIR contracts a team can have?

The 50 spc limit plus requirement to ice a roster at minimum sort of gives the boundaries there.

Thanks. So theoretically they would, but not really because those LTIR guys would take up the 15.2 in your example. I understand the Clarkson deal was done to get as close to the cap as possible but anymore just doesn't make sense. You still can't go over the cap with players that are active on your roster.

Ah, they would still be on LTIR.  But my point still stands:  you can place a player on LTIR in the summer (if they have no chance of returning) to open up cap space to bring on other players.  You don't have to wait until the start of the season.

For me it takes a lot of the mystique and fun out of it for sure . I never cared to see behind the curtain of the NHL. I don?t want to meet the wizard who?s pulling the strings . Lol. Personally I?d much rather read stories about players and where they fit on the teams depth charts and not how they?ll fit under the cap.

This is what I mean.  I guess as a fan you could totally ignore the salary cap altogether, but in reality you can't especially when you see deals that are all based on doing something with the cap.  Marleau traded for a 1st is another example, never would have happened without the cap.
