Marlies Talk 14/15 | aka What's Nylander up to?

I don't really watch or follow the Marlies, but I read something about him being moved to centre recently, and playing well there in a checking style role. He's extremely unlikely to pan out as much, but there may be some hope for him as a 4th liner.

Yeah, I remember that. Screamed like the coach just giving him lip service.

There were some good players picked after him that's for sure.

Looking at that draft and Tampa picked:

Namestnikov at #27
Kucherov at #58
Palat at #208

Pretty great.

anyone know what is up with biggs?  His stats for the marlies over the last 2 years:
57 7 2 9 39 0
43 2 2 4 45 -7
Burke hyped him as a scorer.  Why so low scoring? Is he even getting minutes and the chance to score?

He's a colossal bust, there's really nothing else to it.

Colossal? I'd say more run of the mill.

Now that doesn't even look real. It's like some kid at a school playground one upping another kid. Yeah... well my uncle can benchpress 1000 pounds! His name? His name... his name... st... ni... kov... Yeah... his name is Namestnikov! And if you touch me he's going to beat you up!

Biggs is a disappointment, but at the same time it doesn't look like there were really much after him. I mean Ty Rattie was hyped quite a bit and he's just meh so far.

I wouldn't use Palat as an example of a better pick, it's just luck at that point. Same goes for Zetterberg, Kaberle, Datsyuk and the rest of the late picks.

I'd say everyone drafted after him in the 1st round actually seems to be on a decent trajectory, except maybe Minnesota's Zack Phillips. Matt Puempel was a guy I remember really wanting, he went 2 spots later to Ottawa and is looking good. Plus over a dozen guys from the 2nd round are either already in the NHL or are likely close.

Two points for Brown today ties him for the AHL rookie lead. Also puts him tied for 7th in overall AHL points standings with 45.

A goal for Nylander too, giving him 8 points his last 9 games. Him and Brown have been playing together as of late, and they're looking like a pretty good duo.

He looks okay but I really think his career is going to go the way of Jeremy Williams, or others of that ilk.  Supposedly his game is an elite shot and not much else.

Fair enough. I'd be lying if I said I've been keeping a very close eye on him. He scored 30 goals in his rookie AHL season though, that's pretty impressive (goals are down this year in his sophomore season).

Yeah and I don't keep an eye on him either, just a name I recall Pronman talking about a few times on Twitter in response to questions.

3 points actually and it leaves him one behind Charles Hudon who has 45.

Also moves Brown into top 10 in AHL points.

Didn't realize they updated the player stats so fast. Crazy.

Nylander's goal from this afternoon:

Nice to see him pick up a garbage goal battling in front of the net.

I'm wondering how high a ceiling Josh Leivo might have? Maybe a Lupul type?

I've watched a lot of Marlies this year and he always strikes me as way too good for the AHL, with a wicked shot and a chip on his shoulder.

I assume he'll be a Leaf out of camp next year.

Looks like it will be a real  battle for open spots next year on the Leafs,  Kozun, Carrick, Nylander, Brown, Leipsec, Levo and hopefully Mcdavid or Eischel (or Strome) to the mix. Could be a much different 9 up front.

These guys, barring Kozun, need some more AHL development.

A rebuild is actually around the idea that players develop together properly in the development leagues, then bring them up into the NHL when they've developed/graduated.  You keep repeating that process so that you're consistently graduating a few players every year.

This also keeps their contract status a little more team friendly by not cutting short their RFA years by fast tracking them into an NHL lineup.

The Marlies are on a bit of a winning streak and are making a push to get back into the playoff picture.  Adding Brennan was a pretty big acquisition to bolster their blueline.

Not to split hairs, but any of the CHL drafts the Leafs make would either have to spend time with their Junior clubs or with the Leafs - no option to spend time in the AHL as an 18 year old.
