Marlies Talk 14/15 | aka What's Nylander up to?

On the same night the Leafs beat the Oilers 5-1, the Marlies also beat the Wild 5-1, and even allowed a goal to break the shut-out in the last minute of the game.

Now that's consistency!

The Marlies are sort of looking like they won't make the playoffs either.  Pretty lackluster play.  Getting outshot by the Binghampton Senators 14-1 in the 3rd period of what was a 1-1 game.

I wonder if they bring back Eakins next season to run the Marlies again.

They're a ridiculous young team, even for AHL standards probably. I think they knew that playoffs would be a tough goal to accomplish this season.

Agreed, the roster is not padded with Vets anymore. No more TJ Brennans and Hamiltons.
Good for them to be playing together as it looks more and more like the Marlies will be the way station to the big team. Even the new guy from Nashville will spend time there.

According to Don Cherry, the Leafs are losing so many games because they sent Orr and McLaren to the Marlies. The Marlies stopped dressing Orr and McLaren and now they might miss the playoffs, too.

COINCIDENCE!?!?!?!?

This kind of went unnoticed, but Troy Bodie was named the Marlies captain a couple of days ago:

Trevor Smith was named the teams captain before the start of last season, but has only played 32 games for the Marlies as he's been with the Leafs for the majority of that time.

Nylander also doing pretty alright so far. 13gp, 8pts. .Around a .6ppg pace.

His numbers aren't as tantalizing as maybe we would have hoped, but the Marlies are a very young and low-scoring team. He also had just 2 points in his first 6 games, and then 6 points in his next 7 games. So it's definitely possible there was an adjustment period that he had to get through.

It's too bad that they likely won't make the playoffs. I wonder if he has a shot at Sweden's WC team.

I've watched a few Marlies games since Nylander showed up, and he definitely looked uncomfortable on the smaller ice in his first few games. He didn't get that many minutes at first, either.  Still, he had some good chances and generally looked a cut above the rest.  Seems to be settling in, now.

I am just happy that the Leafs left him with the Marlies rather than 'Luke Schenn' him based on potential.  I hope they do that with the next few years of draft picks and let them develop.

True, but I'm ok with him having an adjustment half season. He's still only 18 playing in a 20+ league. If we're going to use a comparable I think David Pastrnak was a complete exception - playing in Tier 1 goes on a ppg tear and is in the Bruins lineup now, but who knows, Nylander can still end up being the better player.

how is Stuart Percy doing?  I found his stats at :  gp23 g1 a5 p6 pim6 -12 ; But with defensemen there is usually more to the story then the stats.

anyone know what is up with biggs?  His stats for the marlies over the last 2 years:
57 7 2 9 39 0
43 2 2 4 45 -7
Burke hyped him as a scorer.  Why so low scoring? Is he even getting minutes and the chance to score?

He's a colossal bust, there's really nothing else to it.

I don't really watch or follow the Marlies, but I read something about him being moved to centre recently, and playing well there in a checking style role. He's extremely unlikely to pan out as much, but there may be some hope for him as a 4th liner. He was definitely an awful pick, though. Just a colossal misjudgement of his talent and potential.
