Marlies Training Camp Thread

I'm not worried, but I do have to say it's a bit concerning. It would be nice if he was a bit more mature and absolutely determined to being as fit as possible.

The body-fat percentage is probably the least concerning, but the overall result of "average" isn't what you want out of your supposed star.

I agree with this. While Phil Kessel isn't the leanest man on the planet, he seems to be pretty fit.

I'd be happy if Kadri got better with the cardio, as I don't doubt his skill. In the end I believe this ends up being a nothing story the second he starts putting up points (which should be pretty soon into the season).

True, but wouldn't it be nice that just for once things went in a nice clean upward direction for this team, without all the bizzaro hiccups like this?

Nothing ever happens the easy way in Leafs land.

My thoughts exactly. Hopefully it works that way with Rielly.

Yeah, well, I don't agree.

The knock on Kadri has not been related to his offensive abilities.  What has been holding him back is his defensive assignments.  More specifically, he wasn't able to get back and backcheck properly.

So now he comes to camp and, according to his coach, is skating on an average level and is a little too fat.

He either improves or he doesn't, and it's not like anyone is hanging the future of the franchise around Kadri's neck, but his ability to improve the defensive part of the game is really influenced by his fitness level.

The fact that he has kind of ignored that this summer doesn't bode well.

The knock on Kessel is exactly the same though. He doesn't back check. I don't remember Phil Kessel's lack of defensive coverage having anything to do with his fitness level.

The guy was/is a speedster who didn't back-check because that wasn't really part of his game (it's gotten a bit better but he's not going to be challenging for the Selke). As he's gotten a bit older he's started to become a more rounded player.

It's not uncommon for young, offensively gifted players to have that problem.

I haven't seen it listed but what's the difference in body fat % that we're talking about here? 2%? 5%.

I really don't know. All I really care about is, does he produce and is he better than he was last year.

Much was made of Byfuglien being overweight at the start of training camp last year and he went on to have his best statistical season of his career. Don't remember people talking about the weight by seasons end (and BTW he was significantly more out of shape than Kadri).

No outrage at Eakins like whenever Wilson would do something other than praise Kadri?

But also keep in mind his actual on-ice performance:

?The one thing Kadri has to improve is his eating habits,? said Eakins. ?His body fat today is probably in the bottom three to five guys in our whole camp. That?s unacceptable.

?That?s the easiest part coming into camp is eating correctly and training correctly. I think he?s probably improved a little bit on the ice. His diet is not where it should be.?

Kadri, who used to be accused of being too small, defended himself. He said his body-fat ratio was better than last year and that he performed better in other tests ? skating and wingate (cycling test) among them.

?It definitely could have been a little better; it?s definitely not bad,? said Kadri. ?The way I?m carrying myself on the ice, I feel stronger. My wingate is way better than it was last year. Even that body fat did drop down from last year.

I also think Eakins has VERY high standards - so I'd be curious to see how he compares with young players around the league (I know it's not possible to see, but still).

Lots of positive talk about Paul Ranger so far at training camp:

Jon Abbott ‏@HockeyAbbs
#Marlies coach Eakins says first day of camp is about commitment. Ranger produced the best overall fitness scores after being off 3 yrs

Jonas Siegel ‏@jonasTSN1050
According to Dallas Eakins, Paul Ranger finished number one in off-ice testing.

Jon Abbott ‏@HockeyAbbs
Eakins was "amazed" at what kind of shape Ranger is in. Felt he set the bar for rest of team. #greatstory more on @Leafs_TV tonight at 6pm

I agree.  If anyone has seen Roy nelson fight in UFC,  body fat doesn't neccesarily matter.  I play hockey with a couple guys who are much "fatter"  than me and lots of other guys on the team, yet the are faster and quicker than most the others on the team.

Yeah, I'm not getting worked up by body fat.  It's a meaningless measure when taken out of the context of actual performance.  And quite frankly, this whole "the team is so out of shape" rhetoric has gone on since Wilson was brought in.  Show me on ice results before you start railing on how behind a guy is.

Good for him though I feel a little bad for him... Who knows but there might have been a chance for him to crack the Leafs roster. Crappy timing. Still, it's nice that he's back in the game and is appearing to do well.

If the stuff about Franson playing the whole year in Sweden is true, then that would increase his chances even further.  If there ends up being a season this year, then Leafs are all of a sudden very short on quality NHL D-men...

More praise for Paul Ranger, Eakins said he was one of the best players during their scrimmage today.

Bodes very well for his NHL chances.  Not like the guy was washed up when he walked away from the game. He was at his peak.  Still plenty of youth in him to be able to regain his form. if he does, the Leafs have a steal on their hands

I think they can very quickly sign him to an NHL deal if they want to once the CBA is done.

I think we all like a good comeback story, and we have had too few around here of late to cheer for.

This guy is still young, big and talented. I loved the signing and training camp reports have been very encouraging.

This could be the highlight story of the season for Toronto. If not for the Leafs, than certainly for the Marlies. I'm hoping for the Leafs sometime this year.
