The 2014 Toronto Blue Jays Thread

Wow, what an ugly loss, though they really deserved it.  They gave up 14 hits, had two runners picked off first, and were still nonetheless a Reyes throwing error with a 6-5 lead and 2 out in the 9th from winning it.  And Reyes goes down as the final out in the game with a runner on, called out on strikes.

The couple of bright spots were Bautista throwing a guy out at first on a sure single, plus 2 more infield singles for Gose.  It's shocking how many plays Gose can outrun.  He hits a ball to 3rd and, even knowing full well how fast he can run, when the camera pans over to first base on the throw he's still 5 metres further down the baseline than I figured was humanly possible.

Encarnacion's home runs were kind of a bright spot too.

You know, it's pretty astounding that that kind of performance has become so routine from Edwin lately that I didn't even think of it.

Yeah, Edwin ties Mickey Mantle for the most home runs in the month of May, and sits one behind the major league record of 17 for any month with two games left.

Disappointed with the loss. When the difference is a poor throw after a routine ground ball, it stings a bit. As long as they shake it off and move on, I'm okay with it - you can't win them all.

He also became one of a small handful of players to have 5 multi home run games in a single month.

Didn't know that. Awesome!

Just adding something I recently came across.  I know hindsight is 20-20, but boy am I glad this one worked out in the Jays favour:

Edwin Encarnacion:

2010/12/16
Signed as a free agent by the Toronto Blue Jays.

2010/11/12
Claimed by the Oakland Athlectics off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays.

I remembered this vaguely.  Edwin bounced around a bit, spent some time in AAA that year.  He was dropped from the 40 man roster that off season.

He came over in the Scott Rolen deal originally in which the Jays also picked up Zach Stewart who was a big piece in acquiring Rasmus.

It does not bode well when you lead off the bottom of the 1st with a triple, then can't bring that runner home, particularly when your opponent scores in the next half inning.

Jose gets one back with a homer, though. 3-1 after 5. Edwin has walked twice, and both times Lawrie has struck out behind him to end an inning - maybe teams are catching on. Jays may need some better protection for him than Brett.

It sure has been refreshing, not to mention exciting, watching actual competitive and meaningful Blue Jay games for once. Hopefully it continues but I have to echo Busta's concerns about the rotation.

Happ is a serviceable 5th starter, at best. Hendriks might stick but, again, we are looking at a guy who's not more than a borderline 5th starter on any average team. Buerhle's due for a big drop off and Dickey is really just a mid rotation starter.

As for Hutchison, well his velocity has dropped considerably and now his start has been pushed back. I wouldn't be surprised to see him on the DL pretty soon.

The East is open right now and it would be a shame to waste this opportunity. Jays have to get a (and, really, ideally two) front of the rotation starter as soon as they can. I have a feeling this rotation (and team) is about to implode, otherwise.

So in what is probably a big FU to my previous post, the Jays scored 7 runs in the first inning and knocked out the opposing starting pitcher. Wow.

Stroman starting for the Jays. He was hit pretty hard even after he was returned to AAA; guess there were no other options?

Saw that - a bunch of walks and a couple hit batters - this kid Brooks was in over his head in his first major league start.

Andy, from what they were saying on the radio broadcast, they brought in Stroman so that Hutchison could skip a start and get some rest. Hopefully that doesn't backfire. Stroman looked a lot more shaky in the second inning and has given a run back, and has thrown 36 pitches already. Hopefully he can give them 6 without letting KC back into the game.

Edit: Good, Stroman seems to have settled down, and the Jays have tacked on some more runs. 11-1 after 4.

Really good article that was in the Sportsnet Magazine a few weeks ago:

He pushed AA pretty hard to give Francisco a chance too.

Beeston talks attendance, of Rasmus, and of the need for natural turf...
