The 2014 Toronto Blue Jays Thread

I don't know what's going on with Santos. Sure, he got the save, but a double and two walks later and they were one hit away from losing. He certainly doesn't do things the easy way.

Heard Zaun on Prime Time Sports suggest he has a mechanical problem where he isn't getting the ball out of his glove soon enough in his delivery. Thought it was interesting, but I really don't watch enough to know.

Well his 2 saves before that were 1-2-3 each with 5 K's (not including last night of course).

This is exactly the book on Santos though.  He doesn't have good control and he's very inconsistent.

Another game blown by the bullpen thanks to a bunch of walks. No idea why Loup walked three in a row with two outs in the sixth - seems to be a theme these days. A three run double later and Morrow's outing was wasted.

Follow that up with bases loaded, two outs in the ninth and a 3-0 count to Edwin. Jays are going to continue to frustrate if they can't come up in the clutch. Frustrating finish to a frustrating game.

Edwin had ball 4, a CLEAR ball, on 3-0 and the ump called it a strike.  It's brutal.

Loup has almost walked as many this season as he did all of last season.

That sucks - I was following his at bat on MLB gameday and the fourth pitch was tracked as being right down the middle and the next two were fouled off (before my browser crapped out), so I didn't really expect that.

For the love of god, why was loup not yanked after walking 3 batters in a row?

Because Gibbons loves him and he's a dolt.

Well I think it's partly a product of his babying some of the starting rotation. Morrow was yanked after 5 innins, 2R and 95 pitches. It's more difficult to burn relievers when you still have half a game to finish.

Gibbons also loves to play the splits. So Loup, a LHP who can't throw a strike, might be more appealing to him versus a LHB in lieu of a fresh RHP. It's the same with Lind, who Gibbons sits against LHP despite his replacement is a barely minor league bat like Moses Sierra.

I understood the reasoning so I was okay with it.  Read that Loup had 13% of his career walks in that inning.  :o

Left handed hitters OBP 1.000 against LHP who can't throw strikes.

Only if said left handed hitter is as patient as Lind, that is ;)

Dickey tried his best to blow this game, giving up 3 in the sixth and leaving with runners at second and 3rd and none out in the 7th, but it looks like the bullpen didn't give him the pleasure of going 1-4. The game is in the hands of the bullpens now, 3-3.

Edit: Edwin, Lawrie and Cabrera with 3 run homers, Jays win 9-3.

Whats up with Dickey....jeez after winning the Cy Young he has done squat. Every game is an an excuse: it was windy, it was sunny, too cold, too foggy....

What was last night's excuse?  He's been a slow starter even going back to his Cy Young season: http://www.thestar.com/sports/bluejays/2014/04/22/blue_jays_dickey_not_far_off_2012_form_catcher_thole_says_griffin.html

A quick comparison of Dickey?s numbers through five starts with the Mets in 2012, his Cy year, compared to five starts in 2014 support Thole?s analysis.

Through his first five 2012 starts Dickey was 3-1, with 30.1 innings pitched. He?d allowed 15 earned runs on 28 hits, with 10 walks and 28 strikeouts, and had given up seven home runs.

Heading into Tuesday?s outing against the O?s, Dickey had a 1-3 record with 23 innings pitched, allowing 16 earned runs on 23 hits, with 15 walks and 18 strikeouts. He had yielded two home runs.

There was a slim difference in Dickey?s average innings pitched and hits allowed between those two years. The big difference has been in more walks and fewer strikeouts, leading to more runs. When you add in his 2013 first-month numbers, the picture that emerges is of a consistently slow starter.

You should hear him talk. I was exaggerating obviously with all the excuses but he really does have an excuse for his bad outings. As the ace of this squad, he is BAD.

I thought he was fine too...it was Cecil that gave me a heart attack, then promptly bailed himself out.

He was REALLY good until that defensive miscue in the 6th, and I think Cruz turned on a 1-1 fastball (FB for some reason there) and Dickey got into trouble.  Pitched out of it in the 6th but then had 2nd and 3rd in the 7th - that one miscue seemed to really change things.

But I'm not saying he's pitched particularly well, but that it seems like he tends to start slow so I'm hopeful this is a continuation of that.  Was nice to see them score some runs during one of his starts too.
