Unofficial 2013-2014 Armchair GM Thread

Elliotte Friedman said that the Leafs are one of 3 teams to have contacted Florida about acquiring the rights to Stephen Weiss. And Damien Cox said earlier today that there's been no progress between the Leafs and Bozak.

I heard Clarkson may cash in at $5m+ ...

If true then I really hope it's not the Leafs shelling out that kind of money.

Yikes!!  Doing some quick math here MacArthur has scored 93 goals and 120 assists in 403 games while Clarkson has scored 97 goals and 73 assists in 426 games.  If MacArthur could be signed to another $3.25 MIL deal and Clarkson wants $5 MIL then our 3rd line should have Frattin and MacArthur on the wings.

I sure think so. And, given his off season, I think it's possible the Leafs could sign him to an excellent price-performance deal -- something close to what you propose. Thing is, even if he were to hold out for a raise toward the $4m range, he'd likely still be a better deal thank Clarkson.

But given how he was used over the last season (third line and scratched), I doubt he'll want to come back.

Clarkson situation reminds me of Bobby Holik, who in his cathegory was the only significant UFA and heavily capitalized on that. We all know how it has ended. Clarkson will be extremely overprized. The Leafs should pass.

Two articles on Clarkson out today.

At The Leafs Nation, Steve Dangle makes the case against, mostly by citing a general rule of thumb about UFAs and comparing Clarkson's likely arc to Ryan Malone's: http://theleafsnation.com/2013/6/17/should-the-leafs-sign-david-clarkson

MLHS is more ambivalent, balking at Clarkson's likely price but appreciating his advanced stats. The man's got CORSI and shoots a lot of pucks at nets, good indicators that he might tilt the Leafs in the right direction on puck possession and OZone time. That's here: http://mapleleafshotstove.com/2013/06/17/monday-morning-armchair-gm-clarkson-vs-macarthur/

Here's a brief look at some of the upcoming UFA's.

Wingers
Horton Bickell Iginla Clarkson Clowe Morrow Bouchard
Brunner Dupuis MacArthur Stalberg Ryder Cooke

Defensemen

I really think Ribeiro is our best bet at getting a 1st line center.

He might be, but he's also not a great fit for the role on a team like the Leafs. He doesn't win face-offs and he's defensively questionable. He dishes the puck well, but, I'd rather have Weiss. He's a step down offensively, but, he's a much better all around player.

Oh no......

Kypreos was at it again today, claiming Toronto was "in big time" on Jonathan Bernier.  Really, how does this remotely make sense?

It's Kypreos. Half the time, he's making stuff up or getting info from less than reliable sources. While I'm sure the Leafs have kicked the tires on Bernier (due diligence and all), there's no way they're "in big time" on him.

Well, not to state the obvious or anything but the Leafs don't have a goalie on their roster or in their organization that's played a stellar full season in the NHL. If you think that it's within the realm of possibility that the Leafs might consider Bernier to be an upgrade on Scrivens then it's less a matter of making sense and more a matter of how much you want to agree with them.

Am I the only one who still despises Ribeiro from his Habs days? He's a soft whiny diving fairy. Or at least he was that in his younger days. Couldn't comment on if he still plays that way since I've probably never watched a Stars game since he got there.

The centres I'd be going after are Stastny and Briere.

No love for Nathan Horton?

Count me as a bit skeptical of Horton. Not because he isn't a good player, but a great playoff performance doesn't erase a terrible regular season, in my view.

You're probably not the only one, but it was so long ago that in my mind it's irrelevant.

I don't think he's a good fit for the Leafs anyhow though.

I'm not buying it either, but they did try and get another goaltender prior to the playoffs.

Assuming that the rumours of Bryzgalov being bought out by the Flyers are true what are folks' thoughts on kicking the tires with him on a shorter term contract?

When he is "in the zone' he is very good. I wonder if he looks at the KHL after a buyout. Although I would like to see him do a media rant with Simmons now that Burke has left town.

Meh. I'm not sold on him being able to manage well enough when he's not behind a solid defensive system.

Do we miss Andrew Raycroft that much?
