Official Armchair GM Thread 2014-2015 Leafs

BBB here is some of the light at the end of the tunnel, I know this should be in prospects but this guys first goal is totally sick:

If a few of these late round guys can be real middle six contributors, the rebuild might not be as slow and painful.

I know this is pretty unrealistic at this point and not even sure about LW and RW but nice to fantasize about what is coming.

JVR/Marner or Strome/Kessel
Nylander/Kadri/Frattin
Komorav/Holland/Brown
Leipsec/Carrick/Leivo

Riely/Robidas
Gardner/Polack
McWillian/Granberg/Loov

Riemer
Bibeau or Gibson or combination over the year

They'll be drafting Hanifin and keeping Bernier I think.

Nothing says bright light at the end of a tunnel quite like dreaming about someone who's repeatedly failed to make it in the NHL as a 4th liner playing on the team's second line.

I never said Matt was a long term solution at that position, he will give some of the younger guys another year to develop with the Marlies.

That's what signing low-cost, short term UFA's is for. There's no long-term commitment and, by virtue of the fact that they can actually play in the NHL, can turn into valuable assets at the deadline.

He's not a short-term solution either.  Why not use that roster spot on cheap UFA's, as Nik says, to acquire more picks at the deadline.

Frattin is worthless.

After watching some of the WC.  I can now see what a Burns gives the team.  I would love to see him paired with Dion.  Then you will see the nasty side of Dion again.  I also would love to see O'Rielly on the Leafs.  Spezza would be dreaming but I would love it.

JVR/Spezza/Kessel
Nylander/Kadri/O'Rielly
Phaneuf/Burns
Hanafin/Rielly
Gardiner/Percy

I would love to see something like that!!! Man it's hot out, I've been in the sun to long.

If Matt stays healthy and has the style of play he re-found with the Marlies then he might and I say just might be an asset. No need to throw down Thor's hammer on this Nik or Avro.
All our amateur conjecture on this site are really meaningless suggestions from the bowels of our sick twisted subconsious minds. That is what has happened to me as 50+ years following the former champs.

The problem there is the basic premise that Frattin "re-found" something with the Marlies as opposed to his talents simply being at a level where, like dozens and dozens of players before him, he can be an effective piece at the AHL level but not at the NHL level. Based on the evidence - and we've seen enough of Frattin at the NHL level to draw some pretty solid conclusions - and his age, it's almost a certainty that he's just another AHL star, NHL nobody.

Actually, it's not. It's not conjecture to say Frattin hasn't played well in any of his stops in the NHL. Likewise it's not conjecture to say that there are lots of players who are effective scorers in the AHL but unable to contribute meaningfully in the NHL. It's certainly not conjecture to say that every summer legitimate NHL players, guys who've proven an ability to contribute, are available for cheap.

Signing those players was incredibly useful for the Leafs this year. Santorelli and Winnik yielded Leipsic, a 2nd and a 4th. Those are good pieces. Giving the spot you're talking about to Frattin over one of those guys is nutty because in the fairly unlikely best case scenario you're talking about Frattin develops into a version of what those guys already are. Frattin will never be a star. You know the expression a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush? You're not even arguing the opposite, you're saying the bird in the hand is less valuable than something that might be a bird but is probably a dead leaf in the bush.

That's my conscious brain working there, bud.

Was just reading some Sabres forums (those guys did the rebuild right IMO) and if Babcock signs the talk is that playoffs are the goal and that a Veteran D and Goalie are the main needs.

Got me thinking that the Leafs may be good partners with Phaneuf and Bernier being available (why not for a re-building team?).

What does everyone think? Buffalo have an extra first rounder this year and next, an extra 2nd this year and a bunch of good prospects in the pipeline etc.

I'd be inclined to look for a 1st in either draft a 2nd and Andrey Makarov. We'd have to add salary so I'm not sure it would have to look like in the end but I feel there's potential between the 2 teams.

Edit: Maybe a 1st, Girgensons and Hodgson....too rich (Hodgson is really bad and expensive)?

I don't see any way they move Girgensons. He's part of what is going to be some great depth down the middle for them. However, they might be open to moving Grigorenko. He's coming along a little more slowly and seems to be one more likely to be pushed out by the combo of Eichel and Reinhart.

Yeah I could see them moving Grigorenko. I'd give him a chance.

Aside from whatever issues there might be with matching players/salary I find it pretty unlikely that if Babcock sort of very publicly passes on an offer from the Leafs to work for the Sabres that the Leafs would then trade big pieces to the Sabres and have to see them come back a bunch of times.

I don't think the Leafs will mind being in the dirt next season but I don't think they'll actively encourage teams to kick it in their face.

It's hard to imagine any trade for Phaneuf right now. He got run out of town in Calgary, he's practically being burned in effigy in Toronto. How does any GM justify to his team's fans acquiring a player with that kind of baggage.

I expect Dion will be back with the Leafs next year and I'm unhappy about that but he's got a proven track record for leading our team to a top 5 draft pick so I guess that'll be okay.
