These are some brutally softball questions.  Nothing about his coaching style, all in a 'how did the players fail you?' sort of way.

They criticize coaching decisions when they are writing their columns, blogs or in tweets. Get them in front of the coach, and they never ask them to explain said decisions.

I know, it's frustrating.  Everyone's scared about their access I think.

That's tough coming out to face the media under these circumstances. I applaud Randy for being honest, and not deflecting too much of the blame away from himself. He stayed pretty classy here.

I think his comments about Gardiner were a bit off-side.  He pretended not to reveal who it is but referred to  him as an "offensive minded, rover type" of defenseman or something like that.  It was obvious he was talking about Gardiner when he said he was shocked by who he compared himself to in the league, as if to suggest that Gardiner is delusional about his own ability.

Don't worry, Randy took the blame for their defensive issues:

@markhmasters

Carlyle on playing sound defence: "[Players] did not want to do that on a day-to-day basis"

Wasn't the coaching, the players didn't want to play D of course.

Maybe he shouldn't have said it, but he's not wrong.

It's a crappy comment by a coach about his own player.  Maybe Carlyle knows he's getting fired anyway so didn't care.

And now we see why everyone is worried Gardiner will be traded if Carlyle stays.  It's more than just teams ask about him because he's good - there seems to be a genuine issue there.

Carlyle objects to idea players tuned him out; implies, instead, that team was simply not mentally strong enough to deal with adversity

Way to jump on that grenade Randy.

I don't think the issue is specific to Carlyle.

Are the Leafs really going to cut access to major outlets like the Globe or the Star though? Especially if the question is phrased properly and not disrespectful or combative.

"What is reasoning behind starting Jay McClement in O-zone situations when you are down a goal?"

I'm sure Randy has a reason, we may not agree with it, but I'd like to hear what it is. Rather than have them post ice time stats and CF% while he is on the ice that we all have access to. Their access to the coaches and players are the only thing that makes these guys any different than posters on fan message boards and they don't really use it to provide any real insights.

He's special.  Really special.  It's nice that people are giving him credit for talking to the media given his "uncertain" circumstance.  It isn't like EVERY OTHER PERSON IN THE ORGANIZATION did the same thing yesterday.

I'm enjoying him throwing accountability at everyone but himself though.  Really shows what kind of leadership he was providing behind the bench.  The players have a very large load of blame to carry themselves, but Carlyle's blame the players for not doing what he tells them game is really amusing.

Hang your hat on that 1 playoff series win in the last 9 years of coaching Randy!

I get what you're saying, but if this question was asked he'd just respond by saying "I wanted to win the faceoff" and then laugh as if it was a stupid question and the rest of the press would laugh along. He's already done stuff like that in the past.

HE sounds dillusional about thinking they played well. Yes there was the 11-2 run but I cant think of many games of the 82 when this team played a full 60 minutes. He has to go .. He seems to not accept any blame.. or much of it

You don't think the fact there is an issue between Carlyle/Gardiner is specific to Carlyle?  Not sure I'm following.

Some are probably worried about ruffling feathers and not being given their "anonymous source" tidbits from the organization.  I'm sure there's a fair deal of 'you rub my back i'll rub yours' that goes on.

Hopefully Shanahan and Nonis don't let the coach make that decision for them.

I think that the issue that Carlyle has with Gardiner is not specific to Carlyle. That another coach would have the same issue. The issue being Gardiner isn't as good as he thinks he is.

Who did Gardiner compare himself to?  Nobody seems to be saying on twitter.

It's not something he said publicly. It was something that came up in conversations with the coaching staff and, really, should have remained there.
