Randy Carlyle/Leaf Coach thread

From Craig Custance of ESPN on Eakins...

"... When evaluating an AHL coach, NHL general managers don't always look just at a coach's win-loss record. More importantly, the examination focuses on whether the young players developed and improved under his watch. Eakins has excelled at this while coaching the Marlies. The success of the Maple Leafs this season came in large part because of contributions from young players, including Nazem Kadri, who developed under Eakins.

'He's made players better," said one NHL team exec. "When they've gone up, they've been ready to contribute. He's done a good job' ..."

I am afraid Eakins is gone. When Vancouver and NYR were asking for permission to talk to him, I was not worried, both team are full of veterans, but with Stars and Oilers in the mix, Eakins is very intriguing option for both franchises given his record to work so well with young, developing players.

I believe the word was that if Nonis had been the one to fire Wilson then Eakins would already be the coach. Time for a severe gut check and get rid of Randy and do the right thing...for one Frikken time!!! Hire the man whom groomed your team, is this that difficult?

I don't believe Edmonton is looking at him for a head coaching position, so I doubt Eakins would leave for anything less.

I was pondering with someone about Carlyle's coaching.  One specific thing was the handling of Grabovski.  Could it be Carlyle is doing the right thing with him, despite any short-term result?  Although Gilmour might not of been happy in Calgary, the experience of playing on lower lines in a different role then he might of wanted might of been the best thing for him.

Wasn't that merely some Feschulation drivel? It's not like Nonis and Carlyle have no history. Honestly, at this point, what is it about Eakins that definitively shows he's the man for the job and not Randy? I'm pretty sure Nonis said at the time that the job came down to the two of them and that experience and market factors gave Randy the edge.

I am not saying Randy is not a good coach (although I would have called a time out with a minite and a half to go in Game 7)  and did a great job. What I am saying is Eakins has been like a father to these boys and gets them to be as good as they can be. I would hope the scenario would play out as follows:  Eakins stays for one more year and Randy after getting us to round 2, is asked to step aside. Or Randy leads us to the promised land and we say "Dallas who".

Eakins has had interviews with Dallas, Edmonton, New York, and according to Dreger is going for a 2nd interview with Vancouver. Unfortunately it's highly doubtful he stays on for one more year.

did any of last years staff leave?

No word about that anywhere..
I looked at the TML website and it states that he was added as a fourth Assistant Coach/Video

I think the operative word is "promoted".  I think only held the Video Coordinator title before.

?I didn?t have a relationship (with him) and not many guys do,? MacArthur told sportsnet.ca and two Ottawa-based reporters. ?It?s one of those things where he runs the show there and everyone knows that and that?s the way it is.

?It?s worked for him in the past, he?s got a (Stanley) Cup from that, but at the same time there?s other ways to do things, too.?

...

?Some guys are good with the criticism and some guys don?t want to hear it every single shift you come off the ice,? said MacArthur. ?You?re old enough to know (you) made a mistake. You don?t need to hear it every five seconds.

?It weighs differently on different people and, for me, it was some long days.?

...

?It was a tough way to end it,? MacArthur said of his tenure in Toronto. ?Just getting scratched in the playoffs, that was it for me. I came back and I scored some goals that were good for the team, but I was done here after that. That was it, the game of hockey, it wasn?t exciting coming in any more.

?It was time to move on.?

...

?He said it all right there,? MacArthur said. ?He was obviously frustrated and he certainly didn?t have a tight lip about it. He was a guy who had 30 goals and two years of 55 or whatever points and then Randy came in and it just didn?t work out. They turned him into a checker and look at him now ? four points in his first game (with Washington), three goals.

?Who is right there? I don?t know.?

He sounds bitter.  I think it would be more accurate to say him and grabbo had some good offensive years on non-playoff teams; but didn't have good years offensively on a playoff team.

I'm no fan of Carlyle, but this is whining. Make less mistakes, Clarke, then you won't get yelled at so much.

Eh. I'd think it's the coach's job to get the most out of his players. Carlyle's style, apparently mostly negative reinforcement, seems to work well enough with young guys who've been christened superstars. Maybe that doesn't work so well with guy's who've already developed and have an identity?

That seems unlikely considering that his Stanley Cup team was won on the backs of a pretty healthy mix of veterans(Selanne was 36, Niedermayer 33 and Pronger 31) and younger players(Getzlaf, Perry, Kunitz) as well as role players of just about every age.

Only speaking to what we've seen with the Leafs. Guys in the same roles they had under Wilson are doing fine. Guys who've been moved into other roles haven't done as well. Maybe that's a problem with the players, maybe it's a communication problem.

Maybe if it was isolated, but this is now Ryan, Lupul, Grabovski, MacArthur that we know of recently who have all had similar criticisms of his coaching/style.  It's not whining to respond to a reporter's question about Carlyle's coaching with your honest opinion of it.  Where's the whining?
