The Official 2013 MLB Thread

Since intention is irrelevant, what could Middlebrooks have done in that situation to not be called for obstruction? I can't think of any reasonable thing he could have done in such a bang-bang situation.

Not much although all that really does is acknowledge the pretty simple truth that as soon as the throw got past him the game was over.

Glad it went against the Red Sox, but if a play like that cost the Jays a World Series game, I'd be beyond choked.

I don't think you need to worry about that for a long, long, long time.

I'm having a hard time cheering for either team in this one.  I don't like the Cardinals.  I don't really have a great reason for it but there really isn't much that I like about them.  Some of it might be jealousy at how much better their organization is run though.

And the Red Sox are simply the Red Sox.

The obstruction rule sure hurt the Red Sox in more ways than one.  Farrell couldn't quite come to grips with it but in the end the decision needs to be respected.

It looked as though Middlebrooks was trying to get up, but with Craig there trying to run across the base, he (Middlebrooks) was merely in an awkward position (uncertain how to do so).  Craig getting injured on the play serves notice that it definitely was some sort of 'interference' (using the hockey vernacular), hence obstruction.

Whether it was destiny-calling or David Otiz's inspiring leadership, the Red Sox captured the franchise's 8th World Series title, with a convincing 6-1 victory over the Cardinals on home turf.  Boston wins Series 4 games to 2.

David 'Big Papi' Ortiz named World Series MVP.

The @Rangers acquire 1B Prince Fielder and cash considerations from @tigers for 2B Ian Kinsler.

Fielder was 2 years into a 9 year $214 mil contract. Surprised to see Dombrowski being able to move that contract. Considering that 2B has been a weak point, Kinsler is a nice pick-up. Also means that they should be able to re-sign Scherzer.

Wow @ DD for unloading that contract even if he has to eat some of it.  I really like Kinsler and think the Tigers are going in the right direction for sure. Cabrerra moving back to 1B makes a lot of sense, assuming they can find a solid 3B replacement.

Lots of chatter that there could be a lot more to come.

To be fair, there isn't much reason to mess with the perfection that was the 2013 Toronto Blue Jays.

Eh, Kinsler is a mid 700 OPS guy with declining skills and passable defence. Not a huge return but I guess clearing a bit of the books, opening up room to re-sign Sherzer and moving Cabrera back to 1st works well for DET.

Detroit appears to have done quite well.  Consider this:

The Tigers turned a $168 million +3 WAR player into a $92 million +3 WAR player, once you account for the cash they?re sending to Texas, only the +3 WAR player they?re getting fits their roster better and allows them to keep Miguel Cabrera healthier and opens a spot for their best prospect. And they saved $76 million in the process, which can probably buy them another three wins assuming they spend it decently. There?s a good chance that, at the end of the day, the Tigers will have taken that $168 million they owed Fielder and basically doubled the return they could have expected from keeping him.

For what it's worth Kinsler has actually graded as being pretty phenomenal defensively, contributing a 7.5 WAR defensively alone over the last five years. He's put up a significantly higher bWAR over his career than Fielder has(34.7 to 23.5) in almost 300 fewer games. He's also got a career .905 OPS in 34 post-season games compared to Fielder's .620 OPS in 39 games.

It's really tough to see how Detroit doesn't improve here significantly on the field and at the bank. It's not a terrible trade for Texas because they need a 1B and they can stick Profar at 2B but if there's a winner here, it's the Tigers.

Also worth mentioning, I think, that if the rumours are true and the Jays aren't going to be in on any of the top tier FA's Omar Infante is a guy who could be the answer at 2B, come at a reasonable price and almost certainly isn't going back to the Tigers.
