Unofficial 2013-2014 Armchair GM Thread

Not that I like Carlyle, but his whole... let em have the shot from the outside philosophy just messes up this stat completely up.  I can't say that system works or not, but using it means the whole corsi has to be thrown out the window.

Ok, not actually expecting this to happen (and I haven't ran the cap numbers), but here's a rough fantasy armchair attempt:

-Trade Phaneuf, Reimer, and the rights to Kulemin to Winnipeg for Enstrom, Kane
-Trade Lupul to Vancouver for Edler
-Sign Stralman, Legwand, back-up goalie, random cheap 4th line centre
-Make Gleason disappear or buy him out

JVR-Bozak-Kessel
Kane-Kadri-Ashton
Legwand-Holland-Clarkson
D'Amigo-Regin-Komarov

Gardiner-Edler
Gunnarsson-Stralman
Rielly-Granberg
Ranger

Bernier
Peters

Not really expecting that type of return for Phaneuf, but again a man can dream. A Swedish-dominated blue line + Gardiner/Rielly would be awesome.

You forgot Enstrom!

Hah. I think half-way through I subconsciously realized Phaneuf/Reimer for Enstrom/Kane was too far off. So just do Phaneuf for Enstrom, and drop Lupul for Edler:

JVR-Bozak-Kessel
Lupul-Kadri-Ashton

Gardiner-Enstrom
Gunnarsson-Stralman

Maybe package Lupul/Franson for a different top-6 winger.

Phaneuf Reimer Bozak for Malkin + salary dump

Not sure it can be that easy to get Malkin.

Heard this morning on TSN.  Apparently Malkin has made it clear he's only interested in the Pens as an NHL option, otherwise he will return to the KHL rather than be traded.

4.55 mill for a backup goalie!?!?

Well, yes, in that configuration. Wasn't there talk about bringing Reimer back for something close to that? I like Bernier but I'm not sold on him being able to really carry the entire load of a complete season plus playoffs, not yet at least.

Someone like Peters would probably be fine but I think Halak has proven a heck of a lot more.

Another topical fantasy, trade Lupul for Korpikoski and something, Phaneuf for O'Reilly ( kinda doubt that but...) Trade for Martin and some deal sending Gleason off for whatever but including some salary retention.

Sign Komarov, Schultz, Robidas... and of course Vanek ( even more doubtful ) anywho, it's fun seeing the cap flex the Leafs have if they move Dion. If there's an overage and you don't like McClement, you could probably find an alternative for about 1m and the rest would cover it.

JVR($4.250m) / Bozak ($4.200m) / Kessel ($8.000m)
Vanek ($7.500m) / O'Reilly ($6.000m) / Holland ($1.051m)
Lauri Korpikoski ($2.500m) / Kadri ($2.900m) / Clarkson ($5.250m)
Matt Martin ($1.000m) / McClement ($1.700m) / Komarov ($2.500m)
Jerry D'Amigo ($0.851m) /

DEFENSEMEN
Carl Gunnarsson ($3.150m) / Jake Gardiner ($2.227m)
Nick Schultz ($4.000m) / Morgan Rielly ($0.894m)
Stephane Robidas ($2.500m) / Paul Ranger ($1.100m)
T.J. Brennan ($0.700m) / Petter Granberg ($0.800m)

GOALTENDERS
Jonathan Bernier ($2.900m)
Justin Peters ($1.000m)

BUYOUTS
Mike Komisarek ($0.000m)
Mikhail Grabovski ($0.000m)
RETAINED SALARIES (1.45% of upper limit)
Tim Gleason ($1.000m?25.00%)

SALARY CAP: $69,000,000; CAP PAYROLL: $67,972,042; BONUSES: $950,000
CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $1,027,958

Do people really not anticipate Percy or McKegg making the move to the big club next year? They'll be 21 and 22 and coming off pretty good Marlies seasons.

Steve Spott has said McKegg is turning into a legitimate nhl prospect and the talk around the defencemen making the jump has been Percy, Granberg and MacWilliam fairly consistently.

As far as including them in a fantasy gm roster, sure, they could be there, just doubtful that its going to be more than two that stick from the d group.

In that last scenario I included an offensive ( Brennan ) and defensive ( Granberg ) option, but really, the only real difference in terms of the cap is if one can effectively do the job then you might not need to sign an interim player like Schultz or Robidas ( I don't think the Leafs will deal Phaneuf... ) and that would be really great for the Leafs.

Also, McKegg and D'Amigo, to me, seem like the more sure fire guys to make the jump from the forward group but I'm not sure both will, so it's a coin flip there with little cap implication. Again, if they can both make it then it's great for the Leafs.

There are a few guys that I'd like to see at the NHL level to get a feel for where they're really at, Abbott and Carrick come to mind.

That's just a LOT of money to sink into a position that can be volatile from year to year.  Unless it's an elite guy back there where you want to lock him up long term, I'd try to go much cheaper than that.

Sure, and I've embraced the possibility of doing that, however, in all of this the Leafs really need goaltending and I'm a little shy when it comes to Peters, or, whoever like that.

Perhaps the Shanaplan goes along these lines: you give Randy an extension to prove to the players to get their butts in gear, gets rid of Mclaren, Orr, he keeps Bolland and Clarkson, but gets high future picks for Kuliman and Lupul, gets rid of Gunnerson and Gleason. From the Marlies they bring up Percy, Granburg and perhaps T.J.,  Leivo, Holland, and D'Amigo.
If they still suck at years end you buy out Randy and bring in Babcock and he makes it work.

What does that mean?

It means the Shanaplan is putting the onus on the players to get moving, that they are stuck with Randy for at least this year. So they better play for him or seek work elsewhere.

Except they're not. They're really only stuck with him on a day to day basis.

Yeah if they players really want him gone I'm pretty sure another 2-12 stretch will do it.

Wouldn't that message be stronger with a new coach?
