I think we're gonna see a few teams go a bit trigger happy early on with a long trickle happening later on. Once things die down I think there will be a market on either Johnsson or Kerfoot. I'm warming up to the idea of moving Kerfoot. Not 100% sure he brings what we need at 3C for that price and might be more of a winger.
I'm moving Johnsson before Kerfoot even though Kerfoot may bring back more. We're not that  deep at centre and that is my only reason behind it.
You're selling low on Johnsson. I think he has a great year this year
Its probably going to be with someone else if we sign a UFA D man.

Columbus clearing room for a run at Hall.
Vegas clearing room for Pietrangelo. Schmidt is kind of available because Fluery is really hard to move (Chicago?)

Teams should be holding these two?s feet to the fire for extra sweeteners to clear their cap issues.

I'm assuming we get another 3C back in a separate trade.
Who are you trading for a centre?

Picks. I think there are trades to be had out there once the dust settles.

Can Mikko Koivu still skate?

I've definitely considered him as an option.

His situation would be similar to Spezza's, although I think Koivu is more defensive minded than Spezza, so now you have a 3/4 center alignment that could be split based on how the game is going.

Yup, me too. I don't think he can be a 3rd line centre though.

4C with loads of PK minutes while Spezza is 4RW with loads of PP minutes. Either one can be inserted into the 3C spot to cover injuries depending on what we need from the 3rd line at any particular time.

That would work. I just wouldn't want either as a full time 3C.

I read an article that said the other day that they should put Marner on the third line and roll with three lines that could be dangerous.  I think if you have Koivu or Spezza with Marner in that situation and some kind of shooter on the wing (like a Nick Robertson for example ) then that alignment makes sense.  Kind of like what the Pens did when they had Crosby, Malkin and Kessel all playing on separate lines.

Just spit-balling here, but trade Johnsson for Weeger ($3mil). Sign Thornton ($1.5mil), Simmonds ($1.25mil) and Koivu ($1mil). Re-sign Mikheyev ($1.5mil) and Dermott ($1.25m). Leaves you with:

Hyman-Matthews-Nylander
Kerfoot-Tavares-Marner
Mikheyev-Thornton-Simmonds
Robertson-Koivu-Spezza
Engvall

Rielly-Weegar
Muzzin-Holl
Dermott-Lehtonen
Marincin

Andersen
Campbell

Leaves us with just under $900k in cap space. The bottom 6 gets 3 veterans injected in which will provide stability and in the case of Thornton and Simmonds physicality. Roberston gets to come up slowly alongside two 1,000 GP pros. Barabanov's a bit of a wild-card as we don't know much about him. He could get squeezed in as a 14th forward if those signings come in a tad bit lower or 13th if Engvall gets dealt for a pick (or needs to be included in the Weegar trade to seal the deal). Weegar comes in as an underrated guy but who ticks a ton of boxes (can play against top competition, PK, hits, blocks).

When you are bought out and become a FA, can teams negotiate with you right then and there?  Why would you have to wait?  there wouldn't be tampering rules at that point.  I just find it funny that the deal for Lundqvist is expected to be announced at noon.  Did it just take that long to hammer out? Because they said back earlier that this was probably going to happen when Lundqvist was bought out.

Yeah Lundqvist becomes a UFA right when his contract gets bought out so he can freely talk/negotiate with other teams. But for whatever reason a contract can't be announced/finalized until noon today.

It's a weird quirk in that, until noon today, the Rangers still own his rights, but they aren't allowed to sign him. They only bought out the future seasons of his contract, so, he's technically still under contract with the Rangers. It's basically like they've provided permission to other teams to discuss contracts with him before he officially hits the market - it's just that, in this case, the permission is officially granted by the league instead of the team.

Yes you can but you can't sign/announce it until UFA opens.

I'd be surprised if Simmonds gets much (if any) less than $3M

I figured he'd get offers of maybe $2-2.5mil so the $1.5mil is the hometown discount. That's a tough one to predict I guess there's always at least one team out there willing to overpay a guy him like even with his declining stats.

Montreal is a team I can see throwing too much cash at him.
