We would have been better off had Eakins been promoted back in November.

Wilson aside I think it's been good for Eakins to get a year of real success under his belt.

If they miss the playoffs I think it'll be Carlyle, unless he gets picked up before that ( unlikely ).

You're probably right.  But Eakins is going to get a gig, sooner rather than later.  He's my choice.

He's a popular choice and probably deserves some kind of bump, personally I'm not all that comfortable with the notion of having him come up and directly be the head coach, maybe an assistant ( Gord Dineen could too for that matter ) hard to really say but with Burke's connections to and success with Carlyle that's more my hunch than anything else.

I'm to lazy to check, but it seems like a lifetime since the Leafs actually played with any effort in the 1st period of a bunch of games. It's like the 1st is stretch time only. Their hardly dangerous in the 1st.
So that leaves 2 periods of hockey so their basically working 40 minutes a game, and sometimes not even that.
The 3rd...we'll get em in the 3rd...Not!!!

I thought Burke cleaned house with these sleep walking bozo's.
Why is Reimer crouching like that all the time. Stand the hell up, and stop letting them lift it over your shoulder.
Cripes..

Just got home.  Blargh.  Until parts of the 3rd period I saw little to no urgency or hustle from most players.  Phaneuf especially looks like he just found out his puppy died or something.  Great game from Gardiner again, though, and I'm still impressed with Brown's effort.  Nice fight there, too.

I'm really disappointed that Reimer started today.  Enough with the bouncing back and forth between these two guys.  PICK ONE and stick with it.  I really believe that while Reimer was out, Gus got better and better the longer he played.  It took him time to get a feel for the rhythm, but once he did, he looked pretty good.  I don't think either goalie is getting into that zone anymore, and I'm pretty sure that even if the waffling between them isn't the cause, it certainly isn't helping.  My money is on Gus right now, but for heaven's sake, just pick one.

Jets are up 4-0 in the 2nd as I type this.  Maybe they'll fight harder as a 9th place team than they did as an 8th.  Lots of games left; this ain't over yet.

Yep.  But not to show up for the 1st 2 periods?  Who, I wonder, will step and take responsibility for that?  Or maybe they should just have another "lighthearted practice" tomorrow.

I don't know, man. At this point, if these guys can't get themselves motivated enough to get themselves going in such an important game, I don't know if there's a coach in the world that could do it. This problem runs deeper than coaching or the captain.

No doubt.  But there is a total lack of leadership, do you not agree?  Phaneuf has made one captain-worthy play in recent weeks, the backcheck in EDM.  Otherwise, he's sucked.

And while Wilson has cleaned up the special teams (although some of the PK success has come from refs putting away the whistles since the new year) I defy anyone to defend his overall coaching job.

We would have been better off had Eakins been promoted back in November.

Why does everyone view Eakins as Jesus? I really don't understand this. It's so funny to see coaches come and go and be crapped on if your players can't get it done, because the coach is the one playing the game, right? If you're a really bad coach you wouldn't be coaching for decades. As an example, JFJ isn't a GM right now is he? I'm guessing that's because he actually WAS bad at his job.

I used to play baseball when I was younger. Players were assigned to different teams each year and I played the same way every year. Why is it that one year my team came in last and another year my team came in first and won a championship? The coaching helped, but it DEFINITELY wasn't a determining factor in our success. I know it's not the same in hockey, but the level of responsibility placed on coaching here is crazy.

Remember when Pat Quinn was fired for not making the playoffs? Was it really his fault?

If Jets win don't we stay in 8th and Florida falls to 9th as Jets go 3rd?

Florida got a point. 1 ahead of Leafs (and games in hand)

Wpg jumped to 3rd but Florida has FOUR games in hand on the Jets.  Fairly safe to say they will pass them again, which means the Leafs are up against Wpg with two games in hand on them still.

The key difference here might not be the difference between baseball and hockey but, maybe, the difference between little league and professional sports.

Sure, but the question still remains: To what extent is it the coach and to what extent is it the players? I wouldn't put it at 50/50.

Am I hearing you right?  You believe Wilson isn't at fault?

Answer the question. Why didn't Pat Quinn make the playoffs in 05/06?

Players got tired of him.  He had made it for 6 straight seasons and they tuned him out.  Coaches have a shelf life.
