The Official 2013 MLB Thread

Jose Canseco is doing a reddit AMA(ask me anything), it might be the weirdest AMA of all time.

Well Ern, out of the blue today, somebody offered me Medlen for Heyward and took it. - Mostly because A) I'll should never have to adjust my rotation again and B) I'll likely get two extra weeks out of Medlen. Any thoughts?

Dirk Hayhurst of Sportsnet accuses Buchholz of cheating. Photos in this link seem to show some stuff on his arm that he rubs onto his pitching hand. Farrell says it is rosin, and there does seem to be some white in the first photo. There also seems to be something shiny (sweat?).

Who knows how this is going to play out.

Baseball pitchers and ten-pin bowlers may use small cloth bag of powdered rosin for betterball control.

If theee*s a cloth bag with powdered rosin available, why then would Buchholtz need the extra on his arm, eh Mr. Farrell?

They're being incredibly defensive about it which makes me believe even more that they're guilty. They're a little too quick to explain what it is. Farrell's answers sound practiced.

The rosin bag is right there. There's no reason to put it on his arm, and no reason to rub only his two pitching fingers in it. He's cheating. 100%.

Here's the one picture making the rounds for those who haven't seen it.  My immediate reaction was the one you mention -- why just the two fingers?!

Just heard Wilner with a weird "stat" - among people in Massachusetts who were polled, John Farrell has a disapproval rating of 1%. That is higher than Santa Claus (13%), Mother Teresa (5%) and George Washington (3%). For what it's worth. :)

More info on the Buchholz saga - apparently sunscreen + rosin = superior grip, and a lot of pitchers do it.

Here's the link

So everyone found the loophole and are going to make millions upon millions of dollars off it. Great. Welcome to Major League FraudBall. The more things change....

Oh please. Doctoring baseballs is as old as baseball. It's part of the character of the game.

Seriously. If you're not cheating, you're not trying hard enough. That's baseball.

Right, so just bring in aluminum bats and get it over with.

That doesn't make any sense. Doctoring baseballs is not a new development. This isn't a change. If you have a problem with the idea of a spitter then there's no point at which baseball would have been up your alley.

Sorry I don't buy the idea that something is acceptable just because it has been around for a long period of time.

That's your right, I suppose, but to pretend as though these pitchers have "found the loophole" as opposed to simply doing what's always been done is contrary to the facts of the matter.

I'm not pretending anything. They found a way to cheat without it technically being cheating.

Or, in other words, aren't cheating.

Sure, whatever.
