Looks like some suspensions for PEDs may be looming...

Link

Melky's name is on that list. I wonder how his case in particular is going to shake out, since he was already caught and suspended.

The union has asked that no players answer any questions about the Biogenesis case, so it will be interesting to see where this goes.

If Cabrera's name is going to be invoked in this again,  I wonder if this whole situation may eventually prove 'distracting' for the Jays?

I suppose it could, although this train wreck of a season is providing its own distractions. :)

Besides, Melky is so hobbled he can barely move out there.

Trevor Gretzky, Wayne's son, in Vancouver with the Boise Hawks, to play in a five-game series against the Jays Class A affiliate the Vancouver Canadians.

The baseball-playing Gretzky grew up in Los Angeles, ditching hockey at a young age to focus on football and baseball.

"If I had grown up in Canada I would?ve probably played hockey," he said.

As a teenager at Oaks Christian High School in California, Gretzky was named starting quarterback of the prep school?s football team...into his senior season...a shoulder injury halted his young football career.

Gretzky turned his sights back to baseball and in 2011, he was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the seventh round of the MLB amateur draft.

"I kind of always knew I was going to come back to baseball," he said. "I just didn?t know when."

...it?s his hockey roots that are drawing attention his way..."I know it happens because of my dad," said Gretzky..."Everyone says it?s hard to live in (my dad?s) shadow, but it?s really not. I respect the shadow he made, the things he?s done for hockey. It?s awesome."

If you play the game hard, good things will happen," he said. "That?s been preached to me since I was a kid."

The 72-million dollar slap in the face

I don't really know what to say about this. The word ungrateful comes to mind, but whatever.

It's not phrased in the most articulate way possible but he makes it pretty clear that it isn't so much a question of what they paid him but rather how he felt slighted when he compared how he was treated to how Votto was treated.

And as for "ungrateful"...I don't know if gratitude is something you should feel if someone pays you for work you do.

He's a poor little rich spoiled boy!

C' mon Philips, earn your keep and let your bat do the talking!

Yeah! Who is he to have feelings or opinions beyond just being so happy and grateful that the Reds decided to pay him a lot of money out of the goodness of their hearts. DANCE FOR US!

The man is lucky enough to play a game for a living and be good enough to have a 72 million dollar contract, and he chooses to complain about his teammate who makes more money than him? Yes, I would call him ungrateful.

Like I said, it reads pretty clear to me that he's not complaining about Votto but rather about his interaction with the Reds. No matter how much money you make you can still get into disagreements with people. You can still feel slighted. Being a professional athlete doesn't make you suddenly immune to those feelings no matter how much you want to attribute it to "luck" as opposed to his own hard work.

I don't get it -- if this was going to be so scarring and insulting for Phillips, why the heck did he sign that deal?  Especially considering Votto signed before him.  No one told him to sign for lesser term and money than he thought he was worth or in comparison.  Regardless of how much he wanted to remain a Red.

Because he wanted to stay with the team? I don't see why it has to be an either/or.

Yes, and how he chose to act on his feelings says a lot about him as a person. Coming out in the media like he did makes him sound ungrateful.

Then there's nothing for him to complain about.

I'd say that the fact that he decided to stay with the team and in the city where he's grown to be so popular despite the fact that he clearly felt put off by his interactions with management say a good deal more about him as a person than a few statements to the media.

Derk said:

Again, I have absolutely no idea to whom you think he should feel or show gratitude. Cincinnati didn't give him a contract out of charity, they did it because they wanted his services. Phillips is an all-star, he could have gone elsewhere and probably for more money.

So because he ultimately didn't want to uproot his family and leave the city he lived in there's no reason for him to feel his contract negotiations went badly or that the team didn't treat him well?

Not if he's going to cite the contract of the guy who signed before him.

I may have a shred of understanding of his position if Votto signed five days after him.

I don't get the point you're making. They were clearly negotiating the contracts at the same time, what difference does it make who signed first?

That they made re-signing Votto, who had two years remaining on his deal, more of a priority than him.
